PLEASE NOTE SERVICE TIMES BELOW: VISITATION: 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 6, 2015..............FUNERAL .SERVICE TIME: 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 6, 2015 Alvin Lamont Hammond departed this life, Wednesday, May 20, 2015 in Kalamazoo, MI. He was born November 24, 1957 the son of Leo and Mildred K. Khayyam in Chicago, IL. He confessed his faith in Christ at an early age. Alvin relocated to Michigan with his family and they resided first in Bangor, later Covert and then permanently in South Haven graduating from South Haven High School in 1975. After graduation, Alvin left home and moved back to Chicago where he was employed in various capacities. While in Chicago, he met Vivian Coffee and to this union 2 lovely daughters were born, Kyanna Beard and Wendy Coffee. He later moved back to Kalamazoo and united in marriage to Laura (Loggins) Hammond, who preceded him in death. He was a member of Higher Heights Ministries, International under the leadership of James Tucker II and Prophetess Moina Tucker, where he continued to cultivate his faith in Christ. Alvin enjoyed spending time with his wife and extended family. He was very creative from a young age, building go carts and later bicycles. He was a fan of the Chicago Bulls and had a playful rivalry with family members who were fans of other basketball teams. Alvin enjoyed watching old western movies and investigative televisions shows. He was a laid back man who was known for his sense of humor. He didn’t shy away from work, and was a hard-working and giving man who was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone. He loved animals and nature, taking care of his family’s horses, dogs and cats when he was young. He always had a green thumb and would give others advice on gardening to lawn maintenance. Through his life’s struggles, the odds seemingly were stacked against him, but he always persevered. Alvin was someone who was a fighter and would never quit in the face of any challenges, always pressing through them. He had a strong faith in Christ and even though his heart failed, rest assured, his faith in Our Heavenly Father never did. He was preceded in death by his wife, Laura Hammond; and his parents, Leo G. and Mildred K. Khayyam. He leaves to cherish his memories, his daughters, Kyanna Beard of Arkansas and Wendy Coffee of Tennessee; 3 brothers, Leonard Khayyam (Vanessa) of Jackson, MS, Marques Khayyam of Nashville, TN and Oji Khayyam of Jackson, MS;; 3 sisters, Sarretta (LeRoy) Harris of Kalamazoo, MI, Alisa and Theresa Khayyam of Nashville, TN; 5 grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins; other relatives; his Higher Heights church family; good friend, Mark Vincent (his roommate) and his friends at Ministry with Community.
