Mrs. Marilyn Julia Lane-Walters

Marilyn Julia Lane-Walters peacefully departed this life on Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at her home in Tucson, Arizona surrounded by her family and friends. She was born in Samson, Alabama on January 23, 1944 to the late Dewey and Willie Jordan Lane. She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Greater Springfield Baptist Church in Samson, AL. Marilyn graduated from Samson’s EJ. Lewis High School in 1962. She attended Alabama A&M in Huntsville, AL and Wilberforce College in Xenia, Ohio. Marilyn also graduated from WMU with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Health Studies and was a registered nurse. Marilyn worked as a pediatric nurse and long-time Dialysis Technician. She continued her nursing career with the Calhoun County Health Department until her retirement. Marilyn married TJ Walters on May 30, 1980 in Battle Creek MI. Shortly after, Marilyn united with the Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church in Battle Creek, MI. As a faithful and devoted member, she represented the Lay Organization on all levels, was an Usher, Stewardess and an active member of Sunday School. She was a mentor to young women educating them on health care issues. Marilyn lived, worked and served the Battle Creek Community dutifully for many years until relocating to Tucson, Arizona in 2007. Marilyn continued her church work in Tucson, AZ. Marilyn and TJ began the Thanksgiving Dinner at Washington Heights United Methodist Church for 25 years. She was president and Golden Heritage Life member of NAACP, a member of the Battle Creek Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Eta Phi Beta Sorority, the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Club, Inc. and the Coterian Club. Marilyn enjoyed knitting, crocheting, needle point, photography, traveling, bowling and shopping. She also enjoyed cooking and baking her famous pound cake for family and friends. Her fondest moments were spending time and vacationing with two of her nieces, Meagan and Andrea Lane. She is preceded in death by her parents, Dewey and Willie J. Lane; two brothers, Ernest Lane and Donald Cady; two sisters, Janice Cady and Peggy (Cady) Everage and mother-in-law, Mrs. Maggie Chriss. She leaves to cherish her memory, a devoted husband, TJ Walters of Tucson, AZ; a daughter, Aalayah Mohammed of Akron, OH; two brothers, Alonzo (Pete) Cady and Thaddeus Lane both of Battle Creek; three sisters, Betty Jean Burkes of Columbus, OH; Flora Lane and Mary Lane both of Miami, FL; a brother-in-law, Isaiah Permelia of Tucson, AZ; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Gladys (Ivory) Miller of Battle Creek; special sisters-in-law, Linda Lane-Brunson and Deborah Elam-Lane both of Battle Creek; a dedicated life-long girlfriend, Barbara Davis of Lake El Shanoah, CA; and a special adopted mother, Edna Elam; two grandsons and three great-grandsons of Oxford and Akron, OH; and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, many special, family members and wonderful friends. ****NOTE: THE FAMILY REQUESTS SENDING DONATIONS TO: First Salem Missionary Baptist Church, 370 Capital Avenue, S.W.-Battle Creek, MI 49015 Washington Heights United Methodist Church, 153 N.
