Herman confessed Christ at the age of 16 at Gospel Tabernacle Baptist Church in Covert MI. He graduated from Covert High School in 1968 and Western Michigan University in 1972. On June 26, 1971 he was united in marriage to Anna Yvonne Baber. This year was their 50th wedding anniversary. To this union are 3 children: Rahsaan, Tavaris and Michele. Herman worked as a Branch Manager at First National Bank (PNC), a Purchasing Agent at Upjohn’s (Pfizer) and was self-employed as a consultant with Kalamazoo Public Schools. His love for poetry and semantics prompted him to publish a book entitled “Let Your Light Shine.” Herman united with the Mt. Zion Baptist Church in 1974. He became active as a basketball coach and youth teacher in Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and Chain Lake. He later became active with the Transportation and Trustee Ministries and served until his health no longer allowed. He was passionate about attending Bible Study, Fulfillment Hour and Church. Herman was also a member of the Big Brothers Association for many years. He has left a legacy to countless youth he has mentored, that are considered part of the family to this day. Everyone knew and loved him. He was called by many names “CH”, Papa C, Pops, Dad and Unc. One of his favorite scriptures was Proverbs 22:6 “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Herman leaves to cherish his memories, his bride, Anna Yvonne; his 3 children Rahsaan Hawkins, Brooklyn NY; Tavaris (Veda) Hawkins, Lansing MI; Michele Hawkins, Kalamazoo MI; grandson, Minister Reginald Gilliam, Kalamazoo MI; granddaughters, Deja, Teya and Leea Hawkins; brother Slyvester (Linda) Hawkins, Dayton OH; sisters Linda Hawkins and Inez Ivory, Kalamazoo MI; sisters-in-law Glenda Hawkins, Kalamazoo MI, Doris (David) Aldridge, Magnolia DE, Jacqueline (Phillip) Laws, Detroit MI, Gwendolyn Stewart, Oak Park MI; brothers-in-law Clarence (Harriett) Baber, Kalamazoo MI, Arnold (Lillie Watson) Baber, Covert MI, Michael (Veronica) Baber, Belleville MI and a of host cousins, nieces and nephews. Herman was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Robert and Allen Hawkins. Philippians 4:8 would be one of his teachable moments to us, “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable, if anything is excellent or praiseworthy think about such things.”
