Evelyn gave her life to Christ at a very early age and was baptized into the faith at Mt. Zion Baptist Church. She was the 3rd generation of 6 generations that attended church there. She attended Kalamazoo Public Schools and graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School. While in grade school, she was interested in volleyball and basketball. Evelyn met and united in marriage to Leonard Turner, Jr. in 1963, and to this union 2 children were born, Leonard Turner III and Anthony Turner. She was employed by Green Bay Packaging and then went on to work General Motors. She later went on to work for John Hancock for many years until her retirement. Evelyn was a faithful member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, and was deeply rooted in ministry at her church home. She served in many capacities that included Mission Ministry, the Majestic Choir, Card Ministry, the Clothing House, and assisted with the prayer line. Evelyn was a member of The Sassy Red Hatters Society, social group of ladies in the community, but mostly members of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, that would get together socially, with similar interests. the would also travel from state to state. Evelyn kept busy with other interests too. She loved to travel and volunteer at her church home. She was an avid bowler and very competitive, winning several trophies over the years. She would also be found reading and sharing the Word. Throughout her years, she enjoyed life and family. Never letting any of her struggles hold her back. Evelyn was known for her sweet and kind spirit and her warm smile that would brighten a room. She was preceded in death by her husband Leonard Turner Jr.; parents, Earlene (Hughes) and Isom Nowling and father James Evans; brothers, James Evans Jr., Michael Evans, Frank Haywood and Earl Tyrone Nowling; and 2 sisters, Roberta Evans and Cherrie Nowling. She leaves to cherish her memories: 2 sons, Leonard (Tammy) Turner III and Anthony Turner; brothers, Gregory (Crystal) Nowling, Ronnie (Gina) Nowling and Edwayne Evans; grandchildren, Anthony Turner Jr., Tiffany Turner, Justin, Turner, Tiara Turner, Autumn Turner and Javion Turner; great grandchildren, Zaiden Turner, Jessiah Turner, Zevaeh Turner, Jayceion Turner and Cardriguez Turner and Saraya Turner (who is on the way!); special niece, Kim White; special cousin, Jeffra Bell; lifelong friends, Dawn Wilkerson and Sherry Kyles and a host of other relatives and friends.
