***NOTE: Full Obituary available below****A private memorial service is being planned Margaret Veloria Martin was a beautiful, proud and passionate woman. She was born on July 25, 1926 to Isaac and Margaret Martin on Briland/ Harbour Island in the Bahamas. Margaret was ushered into the arms of Jesus on September 8, 2020 at Rose Harbor Hospice where she had been since June18, 2020 after suffering a stroke. Margaret came to America as a nanny in 1947 at 21 years old. She arrived in Kalamazoo, Michigan where she remained. Margaret was a woman of great faith and was blessed to live 94 beautiful strong years. Margaret loved cooking and caring for others especially her family. She always wanted to cook something and she always wanted to make you feel cared for. She would have 8 or 9 of her grandkids at a time and make them pancakes, bacon and eggs for breakfast. She was a naturer and a activist at the same time. She loved playing cards, watching cowboy movies, and the crime channels. She had signature sayings she was known for including: “whatsy whatsy” and dee dee dee”. Margaret was beautiful, smart, authentic and funny, she was liberal in her beliefs and wouldn’t judge others no matter what their circumstances were. In November of 1951 Margaret married Jessie Mitchell (the love of her life) and they had six children. Rosemary (Michael)Brown, Margo (Victor)Anderson, Karen Mitchell, Jessie Mitchell, Merry Sue (Dale)Battles and Sidney Mitchell. Margaret worked at Bronson Hospital for over twenty years as a nurse’s assistant. She retired from Bronson in 1986 but continued to care for patients at their homes for many years. Margaret leaves to cherish her memory her six children and her beautiful grandchildren: Anthony, Marlo, Jaziel, Dennis Jr. Maurice, Kimberly, Eddie, Roscoe, Troy, Andre, Little Sidney, William, Donald, Shannon, Daequan, Shaquille, Edward, Sidneka, Elijah, Siderio and Layla. Margaret leaves a host of beautiful great grand children and great great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. She has a special niece Lemmie (Dick) Malcolm of Habour Island and a special nephew Vincent (Lori) Carey of Wisconsin, a special friend, Margaret Weatherspoon and a daughter in love, Vanessa Darden. Margaret loved all the neighborhood kids from Rose Street and Elizabeth Street where she lived for 50 years. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Jaziel and Samuel Martin and sisters Caroline Carey and Joyce Cleare. Margaret wish was to return home to the Bahamas.
