She was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan on September 18, 1949, the daughter of the late Lee Ambrose Johnson, Sr. and Hattie Lou Johnson. Bertha attended Kalamazoo Central High School, where she received her GED. She was a homemaker for most of her life, but she was also employed for several years as a lunch attendant at Woodward Elementary School in Kalamazoo. In 1977, she met the love of her life, Larry James Pearson. On August 18, 1978 they united in marriage. Bertha confessed her belief in Christ at an early age at Galilee Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Mabry Gardner. She served on the Junior and Senior Usher Board for years until her health declined. Bertha was a Phenomenal Woman, who was known for being a giving and generous person with a big heart. She would open-up her home and yard to others without hesitation. The street she lived on was also known as “Queen Mable Street”, dedicated to how everyone felt about her. Bert was passionate about cooking especially soul food for family and friends. Everyone loved her hot water cornbread and peach cobbler. It made her smile to know everyone enjoyed the food she prepared. Lou Bertha loved her husband, children, extended family and friends. She will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her.
