Mother Bertha May Lewis

Mother Bertha May Lewis went home to be with the Lord Monday, July 30, 2010 in Kalamazoo, MI. She was born April 8, 1923 the daughter of Soloman and Alberta Johnson in Greenwood, MS. She accepted Christ at an early age and became a member of The House of Prayer Church of God In Christ in Kalamazoo, MI. In 1939, Bertha united in holy matrimony to Robert Lewis in Greenwood, MS and to this union a daughter, Virginia was born. They relocated to Chicago where they resided for 47 years. They later relocated their family to Kalamazoo, MI. Bertha and Robert were married for 60 years when he went home to be with the Lord in 1999. Bertha enjoyed tending to her flowers and working in her yard. She loved to spend time with her family, especially her grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Bertha enjoyed getting together with her friends to talk and fellowship. She was a very giving and family-oriented person, who loved all children. She would help family members with the raising of their children. Bertha loved hosting "Pity Pat" card playing parties at her home. She was the best mother grandmother, and aunt anyone could ever have. She will truly be missed by all who knew and loved her. Bertha was preceded in death by her husband: Robert Lewis; 1 grandson, Louis Whittmore Jr.; 1 great-grandson, Tyrone Whittmore; 2 brothers: Monroe Johnson and O.C. Johnson; 2 sisters, Ruby Redmon and Georgia Mae Johnson; 1 special niece, Betty Louise Jackson; 1 son-in-law, Louis Whittmore Sr.; 3 sister-in-laws, Lillie Mae Johnson, Elizabeth Anderson and Katie Mae Young; 1 special brother-in-law, George Bonnett. She leaves to cherish her loving memory: her daughter, Virgina Whittmore; 3 grandchildren: Geraldine Whittmore, Duane Whittmore, and Patricia (Harres) Maxwell; 10 great-grandchildren: Toni Whittmore, Monique Whittmore, Lashaun Porter, Duane Moore, Deonta Moore, Tarqik Moore, Damian Maxwell, Lee Maxwell, Atiba Walker and Ahmir Whittmore; 1 sister, Bessie Mae Bonnett; a special nephew, Wesley Lee Johnson; 6 great-great-grandchildren: Daesharique, Darrion, Dayton, Dah-Maree, Lahasia and Hashia; 2 great-great-great-grandchildren: Julian and Lazaiya; 2 sister-in-laws, Rosie Lee Blackmon and Helen Johnson; and a host of nieces, nephews and many special friends.
